Having Clutter Can Distract You from Important Things

This month I didn’t want to focus on exercise or nutrition. It is spring…time for some clearing out, purging, and straightening up!

Do you own your stuff or does it own you? Everything you own has a call on your attention, and the more clutter you have, the more your energy is tied up in mundane matters. It all needs taking care of in some way. When you clear out your clutter, you leave yourself free to put the important things of your life in perspective, rather than being constantly bogged down in the details of day-to-day maintenance.

Here are 5 ideas to get you started (try one each week this month):

UN-DECORATE: Challenge yourself to find five trinkets or decorative items that don’t fill you with joy when you look at them. Give them away.

PULLING YOUR WEIGHT: Weigh each family member. Now give everyone 10 minutes to bag things they own to give away. Weigh everyone again holding their bags; whoever has “gained” the most weight wins!

THE DOOR TAX: Place an empty box near your garage, side or front door to collect items to give away. Every time you leave your house this month, place one item in the box!

INSPECTOR GADGET: Ask everyone to bring their chargers, iPods, portable DVD players, cords, e-readers, game consoles, cameras, converters, etc to the table one weekend afternoon and spend 20 minutes together sorting out what all of you no longer use. Organize them and sell or give away those that are no longer useful. Check out Ebay’s ‘Sell for me” program.

5-5-5: In the next five minutes, find five items in the room where you are sitting right now to give away. Find 5 that you can throw away and then find five that you can put away. Ready….GO!

Clutter is stuck energy that has far-reaching effects physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The simple act of clearing clutter can transform your life by releasing negative emotions, generating energy, and allowing you to create space in your life for the things you want to achieve.
